I believe in Christian based homeschooling. One of the main reasons that I chose to homeschool was because I wanted to provide a Christian world view. I wanted my children to hear that some scientists believe in creation. I wanted them to know that many of the famous people in history also believed the Bible.
There are two ways to teach a Christian world view. One way the Bible is taught as a separate subject. The Child reads a passage of scripture and answers some questions. This is similar Sunday school or doing a Bible study. After the Bible lesson child moves on to math, science, writing, etc.
The other way to teach Christian values is to integrate the Bible into history and science. An example would be if you are studying government, Bible verses that deal with government would be looked at.
Having a Bible study is also another way to teach a Christian world view. There are several ways to have a Bible study. You and your child could read through the Bible. Another idea is to have your child join a group.
History plays an important role in Christian based homeschooling. The stories of the Bible are taught as historical fact with applications for today.
We look at godly people throughout history. People of the Bible are taught. We also study people who reformed the church such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Charles Wesley.
When we study American history we look at godly people who helped developed the USA. We read history books that present a Christian view such as The Light and the Glory by Peter Marshall and David Manuel. We also read Christian biographies.
Beside people who were influenced by God we also look at civilizations both modern and ancient. A good reference set is The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer.
Creation is taught especially when the children are young. Nature is taught and observed. Life is taught that it does not change and begins at conception. Evolution is taught only after the child has matured and has a firm foundation in the Bible. We also read about scientists that believed the Bible.
Reading is also important. Besides the Bible look for good Christian literature. I have listed some of my children's favorites.
Ask people at your church who homeschool what they use for curriculum. They may even let you borrow books so that you can review them.
Look on line for Christian based curriculum. Ask for catalog. I have used Christian Book Distributors, Alpha Omega, and Timberdoodle.
Homeschool curriculum can be found at Christian Book Distributors or CBD. They sell material from Bob Jones, Alpha Omega, Christian Liberty Press and other publishers.
Timberdoodle sells a lot of hands on curriculum, Pathway Readers and some textbooks.
Alpha Omega sells Switched on Schoolhouse, Lifepac, The Weaver Curriculum, and Horizons. They also provide an academy for those who want or need teacher help.
There are also online Christian schools. Ask what their Christian views are and what they expect from their students. Also ask about the cost.
If you are a Christian, Christian based homeschooling should be important. In Deuteronomy 6:6-8 it says,"And these words which I have commanded you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." (NKJV)
