Where do you get homeschool books? That is one of the first questions people ask when they decide to homeschool. It has never been an easy question to answer. A lot depends on what type of books you are talking about. As a homeschooling family we have books about how to homeschool, curriculum books, reference books, and books just for fun.
In the beginning there was not many places were you could buy books. Today there is a large assortment of books and curriculum that is available.
I bought my first book about homeschooling at a Christian bookstore. It was Better Late than Early by Raymond Moore. The book had the address for the Moore Foundation in the book. I wrote for their catalog and bought my first curriculum through them.
Today some Christian books stores sell curriculum. You might still find books about homeschooling. A Christian bookstore is good place to find books about the Bible. You can also find Christian fiction.
In some locations there are educational stores for teachers. I have bought some reference materials and other educational items there.
You can find literature and biographies at general bookstores
When I first started homeschooling I received a lot of catalogs through the mail. Some of the catalogs I still use today others have gone by the way side.
One of my favorite places to get curriculum is the Christian Book Distributors. They have a catalog just for homeschoolers. You can find a lot of homeschool curriculum at a reasonable price. The catalog is divided into subjects and venders. It is easy to find what you want.
I have also bought books and educational toys from Timberdoodle. They are now selling items that support autistic education.
Some of my friends have used Rainbow Resource CenterThe catalog is very large. I am overwhelmed with all of the homeschool books that are available in the Rainbow catalog.
I like looking at catalogs because of the reviews. Reading the reviews help me plan my curriculum for next year.
There are several places on the internet where you can buy curriculum. I only like to use the internet when I know what book I plan to buy. I also like to use the internet to compare prices.
The three catalogs that I mentioned above also have websites. You can buy directly from the website.
Curriculum venders also have internet websites. If you are buying a complete set of books it is sometimes cheaper to by directly from the vender.
Some homeschool curriculum is only available on the internet. Most of these books are written by homeschoolers. Some are very good.
There are also some homeschool books that are written as e-books.CurrClick is a website devoted to selling e-books. E-books are inexpensive. You can download the books to read on your computer or electronic reader.
Every spring and summer there are regional conventions. Besides lectures about homeschool issues there is a book fair. At the book fair you can look at the books. You can also talk to a book representative.
If you do not have internet access or do not want to buy online you can write for catalogs. To find addresses look online at the library.
You can buy direct from Alpha Omega, Bob Jones, Abeca and other venders.
You can also borrow homeschool books from friends.
Another place to get books is at garage sales and used book sales at schools and libraries.
Spring is a good time to buy homeschool books. A lot of curriculum venders have spring sales.
Catalogs have sales. Sometimes individual books go on sales. Sometimes there are clearance sales for older curriculum.
