Homeschool Unit Study
for Teaching Christ

A homeschool unit study is a great way to teach Biblical principles. You can read passages in the Bible and make a unit around the Biblical theme. Another way is to start with a idea and add scripture to the central theme. I have used the unit study approach for years have enjoyed teaching this way.

Teaching Different Grades

I find that using a homeschool unit study is great for families with more than one child. An older child can help a younger sibling. The older one can read to the younger child. He can also help the younger child with a project.

Everyone can learn the same thing just at a different level. If we are doing a unit on stars, I can have my youngest child draw a picture of star. My older child can write a short story about a star.

Doing unit studies saves on my time. I only have to plan one lesson with activities for each grade.

Children with Special Needs

A unit study can spark the interest of a child who struggles with learning. If your child is interested in trains you can build a unit about trains. He will then learn history and geography. You can study how trains helped improve the quality of life for people. This could lead to the study of nutrition.

When doing a unit study a child can be given options for learning activities. They do not have to fill in the blanks on a worksheet or write an essay. When we are studying we talk a lot about the subject. I give information and ask questions. We also do a lot of projects. The children draw pictures, cook, or make models.

How to write a Unit Study

First pick a verse of scripture of a topic that interest you. Then organize subjects around the topic.

A study based on scripture would look something like this.

  • Bible: Mathew 2:1-12-the Magi follow the star, research other Bible verses about stars
  • History: How stars were used in navigation Read about Francis Key Scott, learn about the Star of David
  • Science: Our solar system, star constellations
  • Language arts: read the Star Spangled Banner, Twinkle, Twinkle little star, make up a star poem, write a report on the solar system
  • Field trip: go to a planetarium

A unit study based on a period of history would look like this.

  • History: the Civil War, slavery, read biographies about Abraham Lincoln, and General Lee.
  • Science: study the diseases that affected the soldiers.
  • Home education: make hard tack
  • Language arts: read The Red Badge of Courage
  • Bible: read verses about government and slavery

When you write your own homeschool unit study you will want to have a plan. On a sheet of paper write what your unit is about.

Then list materials that you will need. Write down books that you have, books that you need from the library. Note any videos or websites that you will use. Also make a folder for worksheets for this unit.

Write what you want you children to do. Make a list hands-on activities and writing assignments.

Donna Young has a homeschool unit study form that you can download and fill out.

If you do not want to write you own unit study there are several that you can buy. Some are based on the Bible. You can also find unit studies on the internet. You may have to add Bible to the unit studies.

Homeschool unit study is a way to integrate subjects and teach children who have different abilities.
