3 Ways to Add Math Games to Homeschooling

Math games can make homeschooling math fun. Who doesn't like to play games? Your child can practice his math facts by playing board games, games on the internet or other computer games.

Board Games

Here are some of games that we have played in our home. Most board games involve math.

A early preschool game is Chutes and Ladders. The child needs to move the number shown on the spinner. There are several other games that you spin a spinner and move the number shown.

In Yatzee you have to add the dice. Instead of adding the ones, twos, etc your child could multiply to get the answer. You have to add your total score to see who won.

There are several games where you roll one or two dice and move the number of spaces that correspond to the dice. When my children were young we played Junior Monopoly.

Another game that involves math is dominos. There are several domino games. At the end of the game each person adds the dots on the dominoes that are left.

In Monopoly you need to be able to count money. You can buy property, pay rent, or pay income tax. There are more rules to the game all dealing with money.

Educational Games

There are several educational math games. If you have two or more children with similar abilities you can play math bingo. Make a 5 x 5 grid. Write free in the center square. Write math equations in the other squares. Make an answer key. Call out the answers. There are also commercial math bingo games that you can buy.

Smath is similar to Scrabble. The object is to make math equations. The first player places tiles on the board to make an equation. The next player makes a new equation using one of the tiles from the first equation.

Computer Games

Before the internet we have several software games. One of our favorite games was Math Blaster. My children really liked playing it. I think that they liked it because of the plot of finding Spot. The game was good for developing speed and accuracy. I liked the first version that we had because you could generate math worksheets.

Now my children play educational games on the internet. Most of the internet games can be finished in a couple of minutes. Here are some of my favorites.

Sheppard SoftwareMath games for basic operations, mixed operations, money, fractions, early math, and pre- algebra.
