Easy Preschool Math Activities

With a little thought preschool math can be incorporated into day to day activities.

Setting the Table

Let you preschooler set the table. Have him say "Daddy gets a plate, Susie gets a plate, Mom gets a plate and I get a plate." Soon He will say I need 4 plates.

When someone is coming for lunch say "grandma is coming to eat." Again let him set the table and figure out how many plates he needs.

Another time someone will not be at lunch. Let him figure that problem out. Soon your child will be learning simple addition and subtraction. Remember he is not ready for worksheets, but he is learning math.

Math Activities with Food

Another fun activity is sharing an apple. Say, "We have one apple to share. I will give you half and I will eat half. Another time share your apple with four people. Your child is learning simple fractions.

You can also teach fractions with sandwiches. Cut the sandwich in half. It can also be cut into thirds or fourths.

Small items can be counted. Count such things as orange slices, grapes or M and M's

Teaching Math Concepts

Most young children have to have a lot of hands on learning before they can learn math concepts. They need to learn the "oneness" of one before they can do math on paper.

Young children also need to know same and different. So, sort socks and silverware.

Preschool math should also include big and little, patterns, and shapes. Measuring cups are a good manipulate for big and little.

For shapes use pattern blocks and items in the house. Windows can be rectangles or squares. Clocks can be circles.

For patterns let your child play with different colored blocks. Arrange the blocks in patterns such as red, green, red.

Simple games such as Candy Land can also be used to teach math concepts. Don't be in a hurry to have your child do worksheets. Let your child have fun while doing preschool math.
